In vitro fertilisation is one of the assisted reproductive techniques used by couples who have fertility problems and cannot conceive naturally.
How is IVF Treatment Performed?
There are certain steps to be followed in IVF treatment. In the first step, the ovaries of the woman are stimulated in a controlled manner and made suitable for fertilisation. At this stage, the maturation level of the egg is monitored. When the egg is ready, the egg collection process is started, the collected eggs are stored safely and then the fertilisation of the ovary with the sperm cells is expected. The fertilisation of the egg takes 16-18 hours and the embryo is transferred into the uterus 2-3 days after fertilisation. If the embryo attaches to the uterine wall, pregnancy begins.
To whom is IVF treatment applied?
IVF treatment can be applied to many couples who want to have a child. The question of who can undergo IVF treatment can be answered as follows; In female patients, IVF treatment may be a suitable option in hormonal disorders that prevent egg development and embryo placement, congenital uterine anomalies, obesity problems, immune-related diseases, advanced age and decreased ovarian reserve. In men, in vitro fertilisation treatment is suitable for people with impaired sperm count and quality, azoospermia, hormonal problems, vasectomy, chemotherapy, unexplained infertility and similar cases.
Methods Applied in IVF Treatment
There are different methods of IVF treatment applied to couples who cannot have children naturally. IVF (In Vitro Fertilisation) is also known as the classical IVF method. With this method, the ovary of the woman is stimulated and the ovary is fertilised with the sperm sample taken from the man. The embryo resulting from this fertilisation in the laboratory environment is placed in the woman's uterus. Another method applied in IVF treatment is ICSI, Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection. In the ICSI method, the egg cell is fixed with a micro pipette and a selected sperm is drawn into the injection pipette and injected into the egg cell by microinjection. In this way, the sperm is expected to fertilise the egg as if it were fertilising naturally.
IVF Treatment Stages
IVF treatment basically consists of 5 stages,
- Phase: The ovary is stimulated in a controlled manner and egg development is ensured. This process takes place with the use of medication.
- Phase: The development of the eggs is monitored by regular examinations. This process is followed until the eggs mature.
- Stage: At this stage, the matured eggs are collected. The procedure is performed under mild anaesthesia and is completed by the doctor collecting the eggs by microinjection and preserving the eggs.
- Stage: A sperm sample is taken from the male and the sperm and egg are fertilised in the laboratory. The fertilised eggs are monitored for embryo development. Fertilised eggs become embryos at this stage.
- Stage: The embryos formed at this stage are implanted into the woman's uterus via a catheter. The embryo is expected to attach to the uterus and form a pregnancy.
Risks of IVF Treatment
IVF treatment, like all other medical procedures, has side effects and risks. However, these side effects and risks are predictable and controllable. The risks of IVF treatment include ectopic pregnancy, multiple pregnancy, side effects and risks of the drugs used for IVF treatment, psychological side effects due to hormone therapy, redness, bruising or pain at the injection site, nausea, diarrhoea, vomiting, abdominal pain, allergic reaction. These side effects are not seen in every IVF treatment and vary from person to person.
How Long Does IVF Treatment Take?
IVF treatment is a treatment process that takes place with the completion of different stages. This process does not require the woman or man to be hospitalised. However, it requires regular follow-up. Therefore, ultrasound imaging or blood tests are requested every other day or daily during the egg development phase. This process takes about 12 days on average. At the end of this period, the eggs mature and a hatching injection is given. Egg retrieval is performed 2 days after the injection. On the day of egg collection, a sperm sample is also taken from the man and the embryos formed 2-6 days later are placed in the uterus. The treatment takes a total of 15-18 days.
