Diabetes Screening During Pregnancy

50 gr Oral Glucose Tolerance Test- 100 gr Oral Glucose Test

50 gr oral glucose tolerance test is performed between the 24th-28th weeks for GDM (Gestational Diabetes Mellitus) screening.

If the result of the 50 gr oral glucose tolerance test is higher than 130 or 140, a 3-hour 100 gr oral glucose tolerance test is performed. To perform OGTT, a diet containing 300 gr of carbohydrates is given to the pregnant woman for three days. The person should continue doing her normal daily activity throughout these 3 days. 100 gr of glucose is drunk by the patient in 5 minutes after the blood thereof is drawn in the zeroth minute on the morning of the day following the evening of the third day and after a hunger of 12 hours. Then, blood samples are taken to measure glucose in first, second and third hours.

  • When hungry > 95 mg/dl
  • In the first hour > 180 mg/dl
  • In the second hour> 155 mg/dl
  • In the third hour> 140 mg/dl

The patient is diagnosed with gestational diabetes if 2 or more of the 4 values above are high. If only one of the values is high, on the other hand, it is suggested that the test be repeated one month later. In cases when the test result of 50 gram oral glucose tolerance test is higher than 190 mg/dl, it will suffice to measure fasting glucose level without the need for performing 100 gr OGTT. If fasting glucose level is identified to be over 95 mg/dl, the pregnant woman is considered to have gestational diabetes and  treatment starts.
